About the Company

Scientific Network Management S.L. (SNM) is a privately owned company created in 2013 by Pascal Kahlem, which focuses on Grant Writing, Assessment, Training and Management for scientific research and innovation projects in Europe.
Our area of expertise is life sciences, systems biology, bioinformatics, and we can provide technical support in other domains.
SNM's expertise is on European Commission funding (Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe), but we can provide support for all national and international funding bodies.

As managing partner within a consortium, SNM provides a fully reliable management service with a very competitive budget compared to hiring a specific manager by the coordinator. We provide expertise, flexible personnel and can save costs by adjusting our contribution to the exact need of the project.

“As former scientist, I know that it is difficult to find time to be both at the bench and at the office. That is the reason why I decided to support scientists and entrepreneurs with what I am good at, identifying funding solutions and dealing with grant applications, and let them focus on science and innovation. Together we achieve successful projects.”

Team

The company gathers a team of four senior scientific project managers, who are involved in grant writing, assessment, training and project management. The company provides also professional web design and graphics design.

In 2015, two of our senior managers have been designated by the Framework Programme "ACCIO" of the Catalan Government as consultants accredited for the area of expertise Horizon 2020 and the sector RIS3CAT "Industries of health and life sciences".

CEO

“I started my management carrier in 2006 at the European Bioinformatics Institute (UK) with the pan-European systems biology project “ENFIN” and realized very quickly that I was able to move scientific projects by helping scientists in what represented a burden to them: the paperwork and the project organisation. In 2013, the company Scientific Network Management SL was born.”

Grant Writing and Assessment

Since 2012, SNM has been involved in the writing of more than 50 scientific projects applying for grants from various funding bodies:

The European Commission: Pillar I - Excellent Science (ERC, FET, Research Infrastructure); Pillar II - Industrial Leadership (LEIT, FET, FTI, SME-Instrument); Pillar III - Societal Challenges (Health, Food and safety), MSCA-ITN, ERA-Chair, Twinning, among others.

National Spanish, Swiss and British funding bodies.

Success stories: In 2014, SNM was contracted by the Research Infrastructure ELIXIR on Data for Life Science to support the writing of two funding applications to the European Commission under the pilar I (Excellent Science): CORBEL and ELIXIR-EXCELERATE. This collaboration has been a fantastic experience with a happy ending since both grants have been funded with €14 Million and €18 Million, respectively, and started in September 2015.
In 2019, funding was raised by the European Commission for the Research Infrastructure EATRIS on Translational Medicine to support the EATRIS-Plus project with €5 Million.

Project Management

In 2014, SNM has been the managing partner within the pan-European project ProteomeXchange, funded in 2011 by the European Commission under the Framework Programme FP7.

The managers at SNM have already managed individually 7 scientific projects and networks since 2006 at the international level (European Commission Framework Programmes 6 and 7, Horizon 2020).

Testimonials

  • SNM proved to be highly professional and created a team-friendly atmosphere on top of it.

Dr. Mathurin Baquié, Neurix SA (Switzerland)
  • I contracted SNM in 2014 to support the writing of an ERASysAPP grant and an H2020 proposal. Pascal and his team provided expert knowledge over EC grant management. Their work and support has been highly reliable during all the writing process, including the consortium building, partners’ data collection, budget development, proposal writing and review, and timely submission. I will certainly contract his company again at the next opportunity.

Dr. Juan Antonio Vizcaino, European Bioinformatics Institute (UK)
  • I worked together with Pascal during the ProteomeXchange project. I can only highlight his good work, his high motivation to get things done properly and in time and his deep knowledge of all EU grants related stuff. He is definitely the "perfect" project manager of EU Consortia.

Prof. James Adjaye, Heinrich Heine University (Germany)
  • I worked with Pascal as part of the ENFIN project. He was an outstanding project manager, not only supporting the group but making sure that progress was constantly being made (difficult in a 5-year project) and making significant contributions to the scientific development of the project as well. I would recommend him highly to anyone looking for a scientific project manager.

Prof. John Hancock, ELIXIR Lead/UK Node Coordinator at The Genome Analysis Centre (UK)
